Hollywoodlegende Gary Cooper is het uithangbord van de real American hero. Vooral in westerns te zien, maar hij speelde ook in komische films of avontuurlijke films. Hij kon goed overweg met paarden en kwam als paardrijder en stuntman in de filmwereld terecht. Een man met een groot charisma, maar altijd een gewone man gebleven. Hij had ook een boeiende vriendenkring. Acteurs als Clark Gable, James Cagney of James Stewart waren vriend aan huis. Maar ook Picasso en vooral zijn naaste vriend Ernest Hemingway.
Hij werd 5 x genomineerd voor een Oscar en won die 2 x voor Sergeant York en High Noon. Hij was ook te zien in de eerste Oscarwinnende film Wings (1927). Verder nog te zien in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Love in the afternoon (met Audrey Hepburn), For whom the bells tolls, de origiele Ben-Hur uit 1925 en vele andere films.
