Hij staat bekend om het leveren van de stem van Darth Vader in de Star Wars-franchise en de slogan voor CNN. James Earl Jones werd geboren in Arkabutla, Mississippi, de zoon van Ruth (née Connolly) en Robert Earl Jones. Op vijfjarige leeftijd verhuisde hij naar Jackson, Michigan, om opgevoed te worden door zijn grootouders van moederskant, maar de adoptie was traumatisch en hij begon zo ernstig te stotteren dat hij weigerde hardop te spreken.
