Gisteren full metal jacket gekeken. Wat een film en wat een perfectie..

Waarom snap ik nou nooit hoe die dvd-recorder werkt en waarom ben ik er vanavond niet... Hopen dat het dit keer wel lukt op te nemen maar heb er weinig vertrouwen in. Kan iemand de docu niet in de pakketservice stoppen?

Hij deed het vroeger wel en nu niet meer terwijl er niks veranderd is. Moet er eens tijd in steken maar stel dat ook steeds uit.

Death is no obstacle to Kubrick's career

Seven years after his death, Stanley Kubrick is about to become more prolific than he was for most of his eccentric career.

He has already been credited with creating one posthumous film: Steven Spielberg adapted Artficial Intelligence: AI from notes and drafts that the director left behind.

Now three new projects that Kubrick either wrote or worked on extensively are poised to see the light of day half a century after they were filed away and lost.

They include the first Kubrick script from an original Kubrick idea since Killer’s Kiss (1955) and a road movie that promises to provide the missing link between two of his best known films, A Clockwork Orange and The Shining.

The three manuscripts, all written in the late 1950s, were found after Kubrick’s death in 1999 in one of the many trunks where the director hoarded valued possessions at his home near St Albans.

Two of them were almost full scripts, according to Philip Hobbs, his son-in law, who worked with him for 12 years. “One is called The Down Slope and was written with the American Civil War historian Shelby Foote. It’s a strong anti-war film set against the backdrop of that conflict.

“The other is the true story of a priest who became the biggest bank robber in America. It’s called God Fearing Man and he wrote it himself.”

However Mr Hobbs was most excited by the discovery of an 80-page treatment for Lunatic at Large, a dark mystery thriller about an axe-murderer who has escaped from an asylum.

“I knew what it was right away, because I remember Stanley talking about Lunatic,” Mr Hobbs said. “He was always saying he wished he knew where it was, because it was such a great idea.”

It is set in New York in 1956 and was worked up into a narrative by Kubrick’s collaborator at the time, the pulp fiction novelist Jim Thompson.

Charles Finch, the British producer of Ghosts, which showed last week in The Times BFI 50th London Film Festival, and Edward R. Pressman, the American producer of Wall Street and Reversal of Fortune, are now guiding the project.

Finch described Lunatic at Large as “a wild and crazy Kerouac style adventure. In Kubrick terms, its like A Clockwork Orange meets The Shining with a fantastic twist at the end”. Colin Farrell has been offered the lead role.

The director will be Christopher Palmer, one of Britain’s leading directors of commercials and the man behind the Carlsberg World Cup advert that showed Bobby Charlton and other luminaries of the game playing park football.

The script has been fine tuned from Kubrick and Thompson’s original by Stephen R. Clarke, a veteran of British television.

Kubrick’s widow, Christiane, said last night: “Stanley threw a lot of things away. These weren’t among them, so he really liked these three projects. I remember reading them at the time. He was very excited about Lunatic but then other things happened . . . the stories were packed away and then we moved to England (in 1961) to do Lolita here.”

Tja. Kan interessant zijn, maar ik verwacht geen Kubrick.

Misschien niet, maar in handen van een goede regisseur moet het toch wel wat moois op kunnen leveren. Ik wil ze in ieder geval zien.

dit weekend ben ik op de valreep nog naar de expo in het Caermerklooster in Gent over Stanley Kubrick geweest. Heel interessant en overzichtelijk, met heel wat leuke rekwisieten ook van al zijn films. Echt een aanrader voor de liefhebbers!

Nee. Die de STanley Kubrick Collection (met die snapcases). Die heb ik liever aan gezien ze daar, op enkele na, allemaal in zitten.

Veel talent inderdaad. Eyes Wide Shut vond ik een gedrocht van jewelste, jammer dat hij zijn carriere (tot aan z'n dood) heeft afgesloten met zo'n saaie film.

Ben verder zeer geinteresseerd in zowaar de rest van z'n films.

2001: A Space Odyssey (te lang geleden)

Waarom worden er eigenlijk wel eens parallellen tussen Pink Floyd en Kubrick getrokken?

Als ik het goed heb heeft Pink Floyd een muziekstuk gemaakt die perfect aansluit op een scène van 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Welk muziekstuk zou dat dan zijn?

EDIT: zag op google een stuk van 2001 met Echoes, wat een van mijn favoriete nummers is. 2001 sprak me nooit zo aan, wil me er toch nog eens aan wagen.

Echoes van Pink Floyd (hun beste nummer als je het mij vraagt) is inderdaad gesynchroniseerd met de scène 'Jupiter and beyond the infinate'

Of dat ook echt de bedoeling was van Pink Floyd tijdens het componeren is echter de vraag (vind iemand hier een officiële bron over?). Ik betwijfel het toch, en als het zo was, dan toch enkel in grote lijnen, want er is geen sprake van perfecte afstemming van beeld en muziek. Een paar van de verschillende 'bewegingen' in het nummer komen wel ongeveer overeen met een aantal grote beeldveranderingen in de langgerekte scene, maar meer dan dat?

Volgens wikipedia (verre van betrouwbaar, maar kom), is de synchornisatie in ieder geval louter toevallig.

Similar to the the Dark Side of the Rainbow effect, it is rumoured that "Echoes" synchronizes with Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey when played concurrently with the final segment (entitled "Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite").

"Echoes" was released 3 years after the film and is 23 minutes and 31 seconds in length, similar to the "Infinite" segment. Sounds in the middle part of the song suggest to some listeners the feeling of travelling through an alien world. The drone vocalizations heard in the final scenes of 2001 seem to match with the discordant bass vibrations in the middle of "Echoes" as well the choral glissandos of its finale. Some argue that there are moments when the song and film soundtrack are nearly indistinguishable. Another notable link occurs during a change in scene at precisely the moment when guitar and keyboards crescendo as the lyrics re-enter for the final verse. Almost as a bonus, the early lyrics contain references to planets, which seems entirely suitable for the film's depiction of Jupiter and its moons. Adrian Maben re-created this marriage of music and image in his director's cut of Live at Pompeii using CGI.

The members of the band always denied that the synchronization was intentional. Furthermore, the technology to play back film in a recording studio circa 1971 would have been expensive and difficult for the band to acquire. Roger Waters is sometimes quoted as saying that the band's failure to contribute music on 2001's official score was his "greatest regret".

Volgens mij gaat het Floyd-Kubrick verhaal vooral over dat Kubrick Atom Heart Mother voor een film wou gebruiken (Volgens mij The Shining, maar ik weer het niet zeker) en dat Pink Floyd weigerde. Ironisch genoeg vroeg Roger Waters enkele jaren later tijdens het opnemen van Amused to Death of hij een stukje tekst uit 2001: A Space Odyssey mocht gebruiken, Kubrick wees dit op zijn buurt weer af.

Ik dacht dat ik eens gehoord heb dat het voor A Clockwork Orange was. Maar ik weet het ook niet zeker.
