The most eagerly awaited film of the year.

On August 23 Lukas Moodyssons latest will have its premiere.

Today Expressen can publish exclusive pictures from "Lilja 4-ever".

Lukas Moodysson is the most successful Swedish film maker of the last few years. His debut "Fucking Åmål" was a roaring success among the critics as well as the audience. Nearly 870 000 Swedes saw Alexandra Dahlström and Rebecka Liljeberg becoming a young couple.

Moodyssons next film was a dive down in the 70's with "Together" and it became an even bigger success. In Sweden, 880 000 people bought a ticket to the cinema. With above mentioned figures in mind, to say that the interest in Moodyssons "Lilja 4-ever" is great - not to say huge - is no exaggeration.

Big interest from foreign countries

- The whole world wants to know what he's up to. Lukas Moodysson is a well known name among film people, says Peter Possne at Sonet Film, distributor for "Lilja 4-ever". The American film magazine Variety for instance, had an article a while ago where they claimed him to be one of the most interesting film makers for the moment, and "Together" was on a lot of film critics top of the lists last year.

As usual with the directors work, very little about the actual story has leaked out. Today however, Expressen can publish the first pictures from "Lilja 4-ever".

The focus of attention is on two young Russians - Lilja and Volodja performed by Oksana Akinshina (16 years old in the film) and Artiom Bogucharskij (11 years old). Akinshina is also in the news because of her part in the drama "Sisters", currently playing on Swedish theaters.

Expressen has got a short description of the story in "Lilja 4-ever":

"16 year old Lilja lives in a worn out and poor suburb somewhere in what once was the Soviet Union. Her only friend is the young boy Volodja. Together they hang around in the area, fantasizing about how to make life easier to live. One day a spark of hope arrives when Lilja falls in love with Andrej. He asks her to follow him to Sweden where they can start a new life."

Don't want to overexpose it

- We want the film to feel fresh when it premieres in August, and not be written apart or overexposed, explains the producer Lars Jönsson, who is speaking for Moodysson, since "he is on vacation in a cottage at Österlen".

Are you nervous? Do you feel the pressure of expectation that Moodysson will deliver yet another successful film?

- It will be exciting to see how people will take it, and we never speculate about how many people can be expected to see the film, Lars Jönsson thinks.

Shot in Estonia

"Lilja 4-ever" is shot on location in Estonian Paldiski and Tallinn, and in the film studios of Film i Väst in Trollhättan. It is based on an original script by Lukas Moodysson and is spoken in two languages. The budget is almost 30 million kronor, compared to "Fucking Åmåls" 10 and "Togethers" 20.

Tomorrow there will be an announcement on which films will take part in the prestigious Venice-festival in a month. A rumour says that "Lilja 4-ever" is one of them.

Swedish film wave in Venice

It will be much from Sweden at the film festival in Venice. Lukas Moodysson is competing with his new "Lilja 4-ever" against Lena Endre in "Music for Weddings and Funerals". In the main competition we will see Rebecka Liljeberg and Bear's Kiss. Swedish short film with Jonas Karlsson can also win a price.

Lukas Moodyssons "Lilja 4-ever" will have its Swedish premiere on August 23 and then compete at the Venice festival that starts on August 29. It will be a part of the section "Upstream" where we can also see Norwegian Unni Straumes "Music for Weddings and Funerals". Lena Endre has the leading part and will play against Goran Bregovic and Rebecka Hemse.

Half a million in prize money

In that section we will also find Steven Soderberghs new film "Full Frontal" with Julia Roberts among others. The film that wins Upstream receive 500 000 kronor. In addition to that the jury will also hand out two other prizes.

In the main competition of the Golden Lion, Sergei Bodrovs "Bear's Kiss" with Rebecka Liljeberg and Joachim Krol, shot on location in Uddevalla, will take part. Other competitors are "The Road to Perdition" with Tom Hanks and Paul Newman, "The Hours" with Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep, plus "Frida" by Julie Taymor with Salma Hayek. Audrey Tautou ("Amelie from Montmartre") has the leading part in Stephen Frears "Dirty pretty things" and Catherine Denevue and William Hurt in "Au plus près de paradis".

Other directors in the main competition are Doris Dörrie, Takeshi Kitano, Patrice Leconte, Agnieszka Holland and Peter Mullan.

Swedish short film "Tempo" with Jonas Karlsson and Tova Magnusson-Norling is in competition, directed by Per Carleson.

The film festival in Venice is running from August 29 until September 8.

Even iets heel anders; woensdag zag ik een stukje op NL3 van de miniserie/TV-film "Det Nya Landet", en daar heeft Lukas Moodysson ook aan meegeschreven zag ik op imdb

Moodysson heeft daar het script van geschreven; en dat is ook wel te zien !

denk je toch meteen aan iets anders, op een of andere manier.

Ik heb afgelopen woensdag pas voor het eerst gekeken; wist niet dat dat al het derde deel was. Zag er leuk uit ja, tof camerawerk ook, heel 'amateuristisch' a la Dogme-principe ofzo!

Dit is ook een goede trailer omdat ie niks van de film verraadt

Ja, dat klopt. Ik ben trouwens niet gek op techno. Maar dat technonummer onder die trailer vind ik wel goed klinken moet ik zeggen.

Het moet trouwens een hele noire film zijn. Het gaat over traficken e.d. Lukas wil dat onze ogen worden geopend naar verluit.

En ik heb net de beloofde vertaling van het door Fischerking aangedragen artikel gekregen. From Swedish into English of course.

Emotional story about young peoples life in misery

Lilja 4-ever

Swedish drama by Lukas Moodysson, with among others Oksana Akinshina, Artiom Bogutjarskij, Elina Benenson, Lilija Sjinkarjova and Pavel Ponomarjov.

Rapes, misery. "Lilja 4-ever" agitates. It grabs hold of the audience and forces you to react, to feel, to do something. Because the film doesn't serve any comfort, no solutions, no mercy. "Fucking Åmål" as well as "Together" described agony and trouble, but ended with that kind of reconciliation that made the audience walk out with a happy smile on their faces. Those films also had a sense of humor that Lukas Moodysson has choose not to include this time.

For obvious reasons. "Lilja 4-ever" begins dark and only gets darker. In the first few minutes of the film we meet 16 year old Lilja in a gloomy residential area somewhere in the former Soviet Union. Proudly she tells everybody that she will soon move to USA with her mother and her mothers new husband. But Liljas smile vanishes when the trip is postponed. And her mother is neither the first nor the last to abandon her. They get an even worse apartment than before, less money, her best friend prostitutes herself and puts the blame on Lilja, who gets a bad reputation. Adults don't want anything to do with the children. They sniff glue, tries to steal booze and buys cigarettes for their last money.

Liljas only friend is the boy Volodja who is a few years younger than her, and has been thrown out of the house by his parents. They dream about something else, something better, about a life in dignity. Lilja meets a nice boy who promise her a work in Sweden. But her stay in Malmö turns out to be an even worse nightmare.

"Lilja 4-ever" affects the audience. A call to do something. This is actually happening to young girls from other countries, right now here in Sweden. The film has a clear message about why you shouldn't commit suicide no matter how much people spit on you. But still, Liljas and Volodjas only comfort is the hope of a better life after this. For a long time she carries her christian picture with her to pray. But who will hear a pray?

The photo of Ulf Brantås and the storytelling by Lukas Moodysson is familiar. Moodysson has a big heart and a rare ability to create emotional film. "Together" and "Fucking Åmål" sometimes made people laugh. "Lilja 4-ever" will probably make people cry.

Det Nya Landet (Het Nieuwe Land) is erg goed. Vier delen op tv, maar er is ook een speelfilm van gesneden, die prijzen heeft gewonnen.

Die Moodysson is volgens mij een grote ster aan het worden. Een schrijver/regisseur met een eigen stijl.

Ik wil alles van hem zien.

Ik begrijp dat de film zeer aangrijpend is. Gisteren is de film in Zweden in premiere gegaan. Ik heb iemand gesproken die hem gezien heeft. Zo ingrijpend dat je gewoon medelijden krijgt met het hoofdpersonage en haar wil beschermen.

Hïj moet zeer "powerfull" zijn, net als de film.

Heb ik ook begrepen Sydney, In ieder geval voor Vrijdag 30 Augustus de boot geregeld, gaat om 1400 in vertoning in Venedig . Of ik echter de boot terughaal is een vraagteken

Fisherking die daar in Venetië lilja 4-Ever en Bear's kiss gaat zien. I wish I could be there.

Ik zou wel eens willen weten wanneer deze films in Nederland in premiere gaan. Als ik de mensen hoor die hem al gezien hebben dan popel ik om de film te gaan zien. Echter het zal naar alle waarschijnlijkheid nog enkele maanden duren denk ik voordat hij in NL uitkomt. Misschien kan Nerd hier iets meer over zeggen.

Wat een slechte organisatie daar in Venetie.

Zit je net een uur naar de film te kijken ; wordt het scherm zwart ! Na een kwartier wachten maar weggegaan om de boot niet te missen. Moodyson en de hoofdrol spelers waren aanwezig evenals leden van de cast en de producer.

De film is ongelooflijk triest ( het eerste uur wat ik gezien heb )

Heb moeten wennen aan de taal; Het Russisch. ( heb ik altijd problemen mee; Het zweeds is stukken fraaier dan dat boerse en knauwerige russisch )

Film deed me een beetje denken aan Wir kinder von Bahnhof Zoo. Omdat ik het einde gemist heb kan ik derhalve niet stemmen. Ga er in ieder geval niet naar toe als je in een goede stemming bent. Meer zo'n film in een depressieve mood; en dan kun je denken; er zijn altijd nog mensen die het slechter hebben.

Of je gaaat met een eind touw een hoge boom zoeken.
