Opvallend nieuws. Gravity director lauds Brillante Mendoza:
The “Gravity" director said he saw Mendoza's films "Serbis" and "Kinatay" at the Cannes Film Festival and has admired the Filipino filmmaker ever since.
Asked what he would advise to other international filmmakers, Cuaron said, “To be truthful to what they do. I don't think that Hollywood should be the goal for filmmakers. Hollywood could be the journey of many filmmakers. But some filmmakers, they choose to take different journeys and I'm thankful for that. Like in your country (Philippines), I'm so happy that Brilliante Mendoza exists.”
“I love his cinema," he continued. "I think [his best asset as a director is] the universe that he creates. It's a universe that is in one hand in which he's talking about a very specific context and very specific characters but together with that, he creates a whole cinematic dynamic with the characters. He's brutally honest.”

Nu vijf Mendoza's gezien en nog niet lager dan 4 sterren gegeven. Volgens mij is dat na Naomi Kawase de tweede die dat lukt bij me. Maar ik zou dat nog eens extra moeten nalopen. Bij beide zijn het waarschijnlijk wel vijf van de beste films die ik zag en heb ik mindere films niet gezien.
En wat is vaste acteur Coco Martin trouwens ook geweldig. Net als de oudere vrouwenrollen Mendoza's films. Martin is tegenwoordig een meer mainstreamkant ingeslagen en zit in allerlei grote televisieproducties daar. Helaas.
