Variety reports that Warner Bros. Pictures and New Regency have partnered to co-finance Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain (a.k.a. The Last Man), a sci-fi epic that will star Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. The companies are currently trying to determine a start date for the production which is budgeted north of $70 million. New Regency replaces Village Roadshow Pictures, which was originally expected to co-finance the pic.

Aronofsky's road toward production on this pic has been a rocky one, says the trade. Village Roadshow came aboard last year when the film was targeted for a fall 2001 start and a fall 2002 release. However, the studio then pushed its production target to this summer. The move was to accommodate Warners' concerns over the budget and script as well as Blanchett's pregnancy.

While "Fountain" is expected to be as visually ambitious as "Matrix," Aronofsky's project isn't expected to have the benefit of being a potential franchise.

Aronofsky and Ari Handel wrote the script, which has been kept tightly under wraps. Aronofsky will produce with Eric Watson, his partner in Protozoa Pictures.

Wat een gezeik is dat met deze film zeg, terwijl het allemaal zo geweldig klinkt

studio wil waarschijnlijk geen $100 miljoen stoppen in zo'n vaag script (zijn de geruchten) waardoor Pitt over is gezet naar de nieuwe Wolfgang Peterson, "Troy" (Superman en Batman staat weer in de ijskast)

Ik heb een vraagje....Uit redelijk betrouwbare bron heb ik vernomen dat arranofsky na requiem weer een nieuwe film uit heeft namelijk the fountain.Ik kan er opeens echter niks meer van vinden en wil vragen of arranofsky al meer gemaakt heeft als pi en requiem??????????

The fountain is een van de projecten waar Aranofsky mee aan de gang is geweest, het kostte blijkbaar nogal wat moeite om het van de grond te krijgen. De opname's zijn iig nooit begonnen. Het is volgens mij nog zeer onduidelijk of de film doorgaat. Als hij komt, reken maar op minimaal 1 jaar wachten nog.

Dus op dit moment zijn Pi en Requiem for a Dream zijn enige films.

Verder is het afwachten wat er nu wel en niet komt.

Hij maakt ook de remake van Lone Wolf & Cub, de bekende Japanse Babycart ronin...

"There is new life in Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain, with Hugh Jackman starring instead of Brad Pitt and a smaller budget. The film was originally set for a Fall 2002 start on a $75 million budget. The project would now be budgeted between $35 million and $40 million.

Little is known about the story, says Variety. Originally the film followed its main character on a psychological journey set in the present, but with a plotline reaching centuries into both the past and the future. Among the themes explored are love, death and immortality.

Still at issue is roughly $18 million in pre-production costs incurred in prepping the first time around, adds the trade. Some of that money went toward sets built in Australia -- in some cases, for scenes not even in the latest script. A seven-figure sum was also owed to Blanchett, who had made a pay-or-play deal on the pic.

Aronofsky is also developing a live-action version of Lone Wolf and Cub, based on the Kazuo Koike-created samurai graphic novel collection, which is set up with Mutual Film at Paramount."

Sci Fi Wire talked to Hugh Jackman who says he will play three characters in writer/director Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain. "It's basically about the search for the Fountain of Youth," Jackman said.

"It is really an extraordinary [film]," he added. "I think Darren could become, in the final analysis, another Kubrick. I think he's an amazing director, and he's written a script that is just phenomenal. I'm honored to be a part of it, I really am; I'm very excited about it."

The sci fi film is about the journey of one man in the present as well as both 500 years in the past and into the future. Among the issues it tackles are love, death and immortality.

Er staat trouwens nog 2 andere topics over Aranofsky.

Kan niet wachten op deze film.

The Foutain heeft nu als status pre-production, de andere films waaraan hij zou werken staan nog op announced. Dat maakt de kans iets groter dat het The Fountain wordt en (voorlopig) niet Flicker, Lone Wolf and Cub en Watchmen. Maar ik geloof het pas als ik zeker weet dat de opnames echt bezig zijn.

Ik hoop in ieder geval dat ook Flicker doorgaat, met The Foutain vind ik dat het interessantst klinken.

Elke nieuwe film van Aronofsky is goed nieuws , maar ik dacht dat hij met een musical bezig was? Of is dat een van die opgesomde 'announced' projecten?

Ben je niet in de war met Richard Kelly?

Hmm, had toch liever Pitt dan Wolverine in deze film gezien....

Dit klinkt niet echt als een film waar je ook op moet bezuinigen, budget halveren gaat dan wel heel ver.

Ziet er goed uit.

Éen van de interessantere releases van volgend jaar.

Weinig boeiende still jammer genoeg. Maar we zullen maar niet te voorbarig zijn.

Verwacht hier erg veel van.

Wow! Een cool verhaal, geregisseerd door Aronofsky, dat moet goed komen! Ik kijk er naar uit!

Rachel Weisz on The Fountain

Rachel Weisz, who stars opposite Keanu Reeves in Warner Bros.' Constantine, opening Friday, is currently filming director Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain with Hugh Jackman.

"It's phenomenal. The most original, incredible screenplay," she says about the film. "It's an original story and Hugh Jackman plays my husband. It's a love story, a great, big ginormous love story. It has a kind of science fiction element to it. We haven't done it, but a little bit of the film is green screen."

Weisz adds that Aronofsky is "like the happiest guy in the world. He spent six years trying to get something made. It's his dream. It's his dream come true, so he's as happy as anyone can be."

In The Fountain, a quest for immortality - via a "tree of life" found in Central America - is attempted in three different centuries, the ultimate lesson being that death, as part of the process of rebirth, is to be embraced, not feared.

Als die etter van een Aronofsky ook maar een fractie van zijn vorige films kan benaderen kunnen we al tevreden zijn vind ik

Op zich lijkt het verhaal wel wat op 'Pi', naar mijn mening.

Deze wil ik niet zien.
