zaterdag 29 augustus 2009 | 23:29

Franse filmmaker Christian Poveda vermoord

French director Christian Poveda murdered in El Salvador.
PARIS -- French documentary filmmaker Christian Poveda has been shot dead in El Salvador.
Poveda's last docu feature "La Vida Loca" chronicled the lives of several members of Mara 18, a dangerous street gang in the country's capital city, San Salvador.
The 53-year-old filmmaker was found dead, shot multiple times in the head, in a car a few miles from San Salvador.
He was on his way back from filming in La Campanera, a suburb controlled by Mara 18.
President Mauricio Funes said in a statement that he was shocked and devastated by the murder, and ordered a thorough investigation.
Local gang members are suspected, according to reports.
Several of Poveda's subjects were either arrested or killed during the shooting of "La Vida Loca," which was well-received at festivals, notably in San Sebastian.
Poveda, who was also a photojournalist, had traveled to San Salvador in the early 1980s to cover the Civil War for Time magazine and returned 10 years later to make a documentary on street gangs.
The film will be released in France on Sept. 30 on 130 copies.

Widely respected Filipino-Canadian film critic Alexis Tioseco, 29, and his visiting Slovenian girlfriend were killed by three men who waited for the couple to arrive at their Quezon City home before shooting them both.

'M*A*S*H' writer, producer Larry Gelbart dies
(CNN) -- Writer and producer Larry Gelbart, known for his work on the hit television series "M*A*S*H," died Friday in his Beverly Hills, California, home, his wife said.
Larry Gelbart had a long career as a writer, producer and director of television shows and movies.

Gelbart died of cancer, Pat Gelbart said. He was 81.
According to the Internet Movie Database, Gelbart directed 6 episodes of "M*A*S*H," the satirical comedy about Army doctors at a field hospital in the Korean War. The series ran from 1972 to 1983 and was based on a popular movie and book of the same name.
"M*A*S*H" was so popular it lasted much longer than the Korean War itself, and was seen as a commentary on American involvement in the Vietnam War. Gelbart also was involved in the short-lived sequel, "After MASH."
Gelbart also wrote for films, with his credits including the 1982 hit "Tootsie" and "Oh, God!" in 1977.
In more recent years, Gelbart was a writer of the 1993 TV movie
"Barbarians at the Gate," which won an Emmy and two Golden Globes.

Patrick Swayze overleden...

Patrick Swayze has died after a nearly two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Swayze's publicist Annett Wolf says the 57-year-old "Dirty Dancing" actor died Monday with family at his side. He came forward about his illness last spring, but continued working as he underwent treatments.
It was 1987 when Swayze became a star with his performance in "Dirty Dancing," a coming-of-age story set in a Catskills resort. The 1990 film "Ghost" cemented his status as a screen favorite.

Swayze played a murdered man trying to communicate with his fiancee through a spirit played by Whoopi Goldberg.
He kept on working even after it was disclosed in March 2008 that he had a particularly deadly form of cancer. He starred in "The Beast," an A&E drama series, and said he and his wife were working on a memoir.

R.I.P. Patrick Swayze.
