Bij mij toch vooral bekend geworden door Mark Cousins ‘The Story of Film’. De film stond onder andere in zijn Top 10 die hij voor S+S heeft ingediend als één van zijn favoriete films aller tijden. Vanmiddag nadat ik het betreffende hoofdstuk had gelezen over opkomst van Iraanse-, Afrikaanse- en Latijns-Amerikaanse films (met een korte duiding door Cousins) in de politieke jaren 60 de film ook eindelijk maar eens bekeken.

The House Is Black is an acclaimed Iranian documentary short film directed by Forough Farrokhzad. The film is a look at life and suffering in a leper colony and focuses on the human condition and the beauty of creation. It is spliced with Farrokhzad's narration of quotes from the Old Testament, the Koran and her own poetry. The film was based on the Behkadeh Raji colony. It was the only film she directed before her death in 1967. During the shooting she became attached to a child of two lepers, whom she later adopted. Although the film attracted little attention outside Iran when released, it has since been recognised as a landmark in Iranian film. Reviewer Eric Henderson described the film; "One of the prototypal essay films, The House is Black paved the way for the Iranian New Wave."

Eindigde behoorlijk hoog in de Sight & Sound-poll. Wil de film nog steeds een keer op DVD zien.

Ik zie (terugbladerend in de catalogi) dat de film in 2008 op het IFFR draaide...

Was in het progamma Pièce Unique, daar heb ik er toen wel een aantal van meegepikt (Phase IV, Limite onder andere), was een jaar met een heel goed bijprograma (4e generatie, Svetlana Prokurina).

'Khaneh siah ast' is een documentaire gemaakt door de Iraanse (toen Perzische) dichteres Forough Farrokhzad. Het duurt slechts 22 minuten maar brengt je aardig in verwarring door de combinatie van confronterende beelden uit een leprakolonie en bijbel- en Koran-teksten over de pracht van het leven. In zijn geheel op youtube te zien.
