A short but intense introduction to the world of Hindi cinema ('Bollywood'), its genres and themes, its music, poetry, songs and dances, its battles with the world outside and the problems within.

Illustrated by filmclips from singing stars in Achut Kanya (1936), classic films of the Golden Fifties from actor/director

Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt and directors Mehboob Khan and Bimal Roy, to light romantic musicals in the sixties. Angry Young Man Amitabh Bachchan, fighting India's internal crisis in the seventies. New impulses from young directors in the nineties, serving the growing middle class and the Non Residential Indians. If recently a growing doubt has emerged whether 'Bollywood' has still kept its unique position as only opponent to the all persuasive Hollywood influence, the worlds

biggest filmproducing country and more complex and demanding audience.

Ten times 45 minutes and two feature films form Cinema. From here one can easily continue ones own search in the world

'Bollywood' has to offer.
