Het leek mij wel leuk een verzamelplekje te maken waarin bizarre krantenartikelen staan die mooie filmscènes zouden maken. Niet zozeer een afgerond geheel, maar bv. een openingsscène voor een thriller, waarna de film gewoon zijn gang gaat.

Mystery surrounds deaths of horses before polo match

(CNN) -- Fourteen thoroughbred horses dropped dead in a mysterious scene Sunday before a polo match near West Palm Beach, Florida, officials said.

Teams are trying to figure out what happened at the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Florida.

It's unclear what killed the horses but necropsies and blood tests were being done Sunday, the Palm Beach Post reported.

Two horses initially collapsed, and as vets and team officials scrambled to revive them, five others became dizzy, said Tim O'Connor, spokesman for the polo club.

"A total of seven died on our property," O'Connor told CNN. Seven other horses died as they were transported to a Wellington horse farm and a veterinary hospital.

Some horses died immediately, but some lingered for about 45 minutes, according to Dr. Scott Swerdlin of the Palm Beach Equine Clinic, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

The horses were between 10 and 11 years old, and were valued at about $100,000 each, O'Connor said, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

A meeting will be held to determine whether Lechuza Caracas will compete at a later date, he said.

"Everybody is kind of in shock and trying to figure out what happened," he said. "Nobody can recall an incident in which this many horses have died at once."

Professor sought after 3 shot dead near University of Georgia

(CNN) -- Police are looking for a University of Georgia professor in connection with the shooting deaths of three people on Saturday, a local coroner told CNN. An alert on the UGA Web site says professor George Zinkhan is a suspect in an off-campus shooting.

Athens-Clarke County Police confirmed that three other people were injured in the incident, but the nature and extent of their injuries wasn't available Saturday evening.

The group at the location were the Town and Gown Players, a community theater group, and they were gathered there for some sort of meeting.

The theater Web site said its present production, "Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure," is canceled.

Op nu.nl las ik een aantal weken geleden over een (Zweedse?) vrouw die een maand heeft rondgedwaald op een vliegveld in Duitsland (Berlijn?), omdat ze de uitgang niet kon vinden. Ze sprak de taal niet en durfde dus niet om hulp te vragen.

Erg bizar, lijkt me ook wel leuk filmmateriaal. Ik kan de precieze link trouwens niet meer vinden.

Woman's death at resort sparks questions

Jill St. Onge blogged she was "having a blast." She was vacationing in Thailand and had just got engaged. Days later, the 27-year-old was dead. Her fiance, Ryan Kells, said he found her ill in their room hours before she died. U.S. officials want to find out what happened, adding that another young woman died at the same guesthouse on the same weekend.

CAIRO, Egypt (CNN) -- An Egyptian business tycoon and a former police officer have been found guilty of the July slaying of rising Lebanese pop singer Suzanne Tamim.

Suzanne Tamim was found dead in her Dubai apartment in July.

The case, with its high-profile victim and defendant, has captivated Egypt and the region.

A judge convicted real estate mogul Hisham Talaat Moustafa and the former officer Muhsen el Sukkari on Thursday. He then sent the case to Egypt's Grand Mufti -- the country's highest religious official -- for sentencing.

The Mufti is expected to make a ruling on June 25, the judge said. Because the two men will be sentenced under Islamic law, it is widely expected that they'll be hanged.

Tamim was found slain in her apartment in the United Arab Emirates. She had been stabbed and her throat slit.

Prosecutors alleged that Moustafa, a parliament member for the ruling National Democratic Party, paid el Sukkari $2 million to kill Tamim.

During the trial, Moustafa's lawyer told CNN his client loved the singer, but could not take Tamim as a second wife because his family objected.

Polygamy is legal in Egypt and it's not unusual for men like Moustafa, a married father of three, to take additional wives.

Prosecutors have said Tamim's death was a "means of taking revenge," but have not elaborated.

Moustafa and el Sukkari claim the prosecution's evidence could have been fabricated or tampered with by UAE authorities and should not be used against them.

Although Tamim was killed in the United Arab Emirates, the Egyptian judiciary tried the case in Cairo because Egyptian law does not allow its citizens to be extradited for trials in other countries.

After his arrest in September, Egyptian authorities indicted Moustafa, stripped him of his parliamentary immunity and jailed him pending trial. He also resigned as chairman of Talaat Moustafa Group -- a conglomerate with construction and real estate arms that was founded by his father, Talaat Moustafa.

Moustafa's brother, Tarek Talaat Moustafa, now chairs the company.

Police hunting for a New Zealand couple who allegedly fled the country after a bank mistakenly paid them $NZ10 million ($6 million) believe they traveled to Hong Kong.

The gas station owned by one of the duo has been closed since May 7.

New Zealand authorities have sought help from Interpol in locating the couple who disappeared May 7, two days after an employee error at Westpac bank paid them 1,000 times the amount they asked for.

The couple applied for an overdraft from Westpac worth up to NZ$10,000.

However, on or about May 5, the bank erroneously put NZ$10 million ($6.1 million) into their bank account.

The next day, the gas station closed its doors. And the day after, the couple went missing.

Grappig, ik schiet deze zomer m'n eerste full-lenght film en het verhaal van die film komt enorm overeen met dat van dit artikel:

(Novum) - Jimi Hendrix is door zijn manager om het leven gebracht. Dat stelt een van de voormalige roadies van de gitarist in een boek dat volgende maand moet verschijnen. Tegenover de Britse krant The Daily Telegraph onthult James 'Tappy' Wright een deel van zijn verhaal.

Hendrix overleed in 1970 op 27-jarige leeftijd aan een overdosis slaappillen. Volgens Wright was het manager Michael Jeffery die Hendrix volpropte met pillen en alcohol. Jeffery zou bang zijn geweest dat de gitarist hem wilde vervangen.

Enkele maanden na Hendrix' overlijden heeft de manager in een dronken bui volgens Wright toegegeven verantwoordelijk te zijn voor de dood van de gitaarlegende. "Jimi was dood veel meer waard dan levend. Hij wilde bij me weg, als ik hem zou verliezen, was ik alles kwijt geweest", zou Jeffrey gezegd hebben. "Met een aantal oude vrienden ben ik naar Jimi's hotelkamer gegaan. Daar hebben we een handvol pillen in zijn mond geduwd en hebben we een paar flessen rode wijn in zijn keel gegoten."

In zijn boek 'Rock Roadie', waarin Wright schrijft over zijn jaren als technicus voor onder anderen Tina Turner en Elvis Presley, zegt Wright zich nog goed te herinneren wat Jeffery tegen hem zei. "Ik kan hem nog steeds horen praten, ik zie hem zo voor me met zijn bleke gezicht. Hij zei: 'je begrijpt toch dat ik het moest doen Tappy? Ik moest het doen'."

Jeffery kwam zelf in 1973 om het leven bij een vliegtuigcrash. Volgens de roadie had de manager het leven van Hendrix verzekerd voor 1,2 miljoen pond (1,3 miljoen euro). Dat geld zou Jeffery opgestreken hebben na de dood van de gitarist.
