Riita, draped upon the eponymous cross, is the film’s central image. Moving, as melodrama is wont, from the sublime to the absurd, even employing a sound stage to the point of abstraction, Cross of Love looks forward to the German filmmakers of the 1970s like Fassbinder and Werner Schroeter, who took apart the cross of melodrama even as they knelt before it.

plot:

Regina Linnanheimo plays Sylvi, whose child is run over by a bus, prompting her to drink poison. She goes blind in the process, causing her husband to lust after her much younger sister. After undergoing a dangerous operation to regain her sight, she hides her repaired vision behind dark eyeglasses, so she can spy on her sister and husband as they carry on their affair.

Tulio's visual touch is here, with the accustomed close-ups and inventive editing. What makes this truly interesting, however, is the moral ambiguity. For 1946, there are a number of questionable elements here that would have had Hollywood censors reaching for their heart medicine in utter shock.

The movies's depiction of post-war anquish and the oppressive nature of urbanization invoke the contemporary American film noir-style, but here the femme fatale is replaced by a woman brutally victimized because of her class and gender. Tulio's regular female star Regina Linnanheimo had become the country's number one actress during the war and couldn't star here because of a contract binding her, so the leading role was played by Marie-Louise Fock who couldn't speak Finnish at all, but was able to memorize her lines anyway because of her determination. Despite her awkward pronunciation the movie was a critical and financial success at the time of its release.

The movie sacrifices some of the novel's romanticism to moralizing, probably because of several factors: an attempt to tie the story to society instead of infantile introspection, the writer's gnosticism vs Tulio's catholicity, censorship, and Tulio's Feminist inclinations, which appear here surprisingly conspicuously. At the same time, it lacks the nihilism of his post-war efforts while still displaying his fully-developed, stylized visual style.

Ah leuk. IK heb het even diagonaal gescand, maar ik zag al Bette Davis staan - dus ik ben in elk geval niet helemaal gek. Dit is ook wel een bron die aangeef dat Tulio wist waarmee hij bezig was - en dus wel degelijk baanbrekend kan worden gekarakteriseerd. Dat was in mijn eerste PM aan jou al mijn vraag: is dit bewust of onbewust. Ik kon me het eerste bijna niet voorstellen, maar lijkt nu toch echt wel het geval.

Dit topic valt me nu pas op - maar ik zie dat je hier al redelijk actief was Cousins zal Tulio inderdaad niet hebben gekend, maar had perfect in zijn episode " ondertussen in Europa" gepast. Opvallend, misschien kun jij ook een Story of Film gaan maken - genoeg van dit soort dingen die toch op jouw radar staan zo lijkt het.
