Alweer een tijdje geleden dat ik zoveel films in een week zag. Aantal erg fijne herzieningen. Martyrs en Suspiria zijn beide in waardering gestegen. Undead blijft een van mijn favo zombie films en Fulci's The Beyond blijft erg sterk. Ook verder met de Friday herzieningen gekomen. Grootste tegenvaller was toch wel Lights Out. Ik vond de short beter.

Goed weekje vakantie gehad, en eigenlijk alleen gedurende de vlucht wat films gekeken. Doet misschien niet aan alle films voldoende recht, maar 't is niet anders - en toch twee behoorlijk sterke films gezien, naast een heel matige In The Heart Of The Sea.

Redelijk wat gekeken voor de muziek/actie genrechallenge. Actie is niet bepaald mijn favoriete genre, en dat is ook wel te merken aan mijn beoordelingen vrees ik - het was geen onverdeeld succes tot nu deze week. Woodstock en het fraaie kung-fu epos Xia Nü waren de hoogtepunten.

The Sea Gull (1968) - dvd - 8

Stunning landscape, filmed in Sweden, so maybe a good double bill with Elvira Madigan. This is one of a bunch of Chekhov related movies I'm currently watching and I am a fan of his writing. For some this one might stick a little to close to the theatre though.

A Cure for Wellness (2016) - cinema - 8

Very stylish and well made pure horror enjoyment. It does stick a little too close to silly clichés too at some points, so sadly it doesn't trancend the genre... it had the potential though.

T2 Trainspotting (2017) - cinema - 8

"you came here for the nostalgia" one of the characters says. True. Just like there is still a lot to live for after 40 (wich I am at this point in time). So, indeed, there is some legitimacy to a trainspotting sequel. Just don't expect it to be a milestone for a new generation. Not in the soundtrack, not in the characters, and only a little in the new 'choose life' speech. This one is for us

Split (2016) - cinema - 7

As often with this director, a nice idea, but poorly written. It has enough weird hooks to keep you entertained though, more than it should maybe. The b-cinema lover in me rated this one

Goldflocken (1976) - internet - 6,5

I do like Schroeter and some of the scenes he creates are beautiful. in the end this one was too much for me. Too much posing, lip-synching and especially (attempts at) humor.

Oyû-sama (1951) Miss Oyu - internet - 8

Very elegant movie! And the center-drama is tragic and somewhat unique. It just didn't yet fully grab me

Przesluchanie (1982) Interrogation - dvd - 8,5

I didn't really want to see this... but in the end I was very impressed by the strength of the woman played by Krystyna Janda

Nachmittag (2007) - dvd - 7,5

Another take on Chekhov's Seagull. I'm not sure if the movie works as such. But I do admire Schanelec's style very much. And the bare-bone characters are still engaging.

Angst vor der Angst (1975) - dvd - 7,5

Another one where I didn't think the set-up was entirely convincing. But a strong female character grabs the attention.

Barwy Ochronne (1977) Camouflage - dvd - 8

biological satire? it says something about conformism, and a lot more. And does so with beautiful images and some humor. The 'head-teacher' is slightly tóó irritating maybe, but this is also to make the point.

Nuts in May (1976) - dvd - 8

There was a cult comedy show in the Netherlands called Jiskefet and they could have come up with something very similar to this. I love this style of comedy. The characters are both larger-than-life and completely believable as real, fully rounded, humans which gives so much room for both absurdism and satire.

Kôkaku kidôtai 2.0 (2008) Ghost in the Shell 2.0 - bluray - 8

completely unnecessary upgrade. some elements now look better, others a bit jarring, but in the end it remains the ultimate existentialistic cyberpunk thriller...

Siddeshwari (1990) - internet - 9

So many powerful images. Poetic, magic, hermetic, beautiful. Works very well as documentary about a great musician, while doing almost nothing you'd (think you) like to see from a documentary or a biography. this is pure cinema.

Neokonchennaya pyesa dlya mekhanicheskogo pianino (1977) Unfinished Piece for Mechanical Piano - dvd - 7,5

More Chekhov. This time in the typical hysterical mode of East-European comedy. I like that, but here it also felt almost like a parody at times to me (this is why I still need to explore Chekhov more). Some of that got redeemed with a very touching finale though.

Mimì metallurgico ferito nell'onore (1972) The Seduction of Mimi - dvd - 7

From crazy Russians to crazy Italians. Giannini is always much fun. And I loved the sweaters that couldn't wait for the 80's to start. On the whole this was just a little bit... tóó Italian for me, I guess

Visages d'enfants (1925) - dvd - 7,5

Very relatable story and characters, In a beautiful and original setting. The way the boy is treated is written in such a way that tragedy is bound to happen. And his acting is slightly exagerrated (bad) too. So that took some points away for me.

Billy Liar (1963) - bluray - 7

Another central boy character that didn't quite work for me. Some of it is relatable, other bits needlesly exaggerated to the point where it no longer is. The movie is very well made though, and has got some great scenes. And some funny ones too.

Na srebrnym globie (1988) On the Silver Globe - dvd - 8,5

Tour-the-force scifi filmmaking with almost non-stop ravings (ranging from philosophical to completely mad) and incredible production design as the two stand-out qualities. The movie was "completed" years after filming with about 20% left to shoot. Instead of recapturing everything and doing a re-shoot (seems impossible actually) the missing bits are explained with voice-over. In the beginning this ads to a documentary feel and makes the films stronger, in the end where it seems the movie aims for a kind of transcendental catharsis it keeps the movie sadly grounded. I love Zulawski's work and am glad to have seen this one now, but part of me mourns the fact that the vision is not complete (and couldn't be released around 1977, which would have given the movie a different place in scifi-film history too)

For Heaven's Sake (1926) - internet - 8

I am not a fan of slapstick for the reason that it reduces movies to just a series of gags. This one is actually not different. But the gags are both breathtaking (buster keaton like stuntwork) and often truly funny too. A very exciting movie, one that could make me a fan of the genre!

La kermesse héroïque (1935) - dvd - 8,5

The historical setting and costumes in this one are truly superb. But then there is the story. It's a full on farce! Totally unexpected in such a stylish piece. But then it is also a farce of extremely good quality (and I know the genre tend to have a bad name because most of the time the quality is a bit... simple). It is not exactly a screwball comedy, but I would like to see it amongst those in a best comedy list.

Peppermint Frappé (1967) - internet - 7,5

Very Spanish with loads of fethisistic and obsessive behaviour, mixing comedy, titillation and horror in a satiric blender. The execution is not perfect (the end could have been a bit better), but I just really enjoy it. Fans of Bunuel, Hitchcock and Chabrol will too.
