Sony Pictures has acquired the screen rights to "The Shadow," the legendary 1930s pulp hero, for a big-screen adaptation to be produced by "Spider-Man" helmer Sam Raimi.
"The Shadow" debuted in 1931 on a CBS radio show and followed the adventures of a crime-fighter who skulked in shadows wearing a hat and cape, and who had the power to cloud men's minds.
The character went on to become one of the greatest pulp heroes of the time, appearing in all sorts of merchandise and several television series, and influenced many others works including "Batman".
Raimi's own 1990 film "Darkman" was made after he missed out on obtaining the rights to the Shadow as this has long been a dream project of his.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Raimi is not attached to direct at this time, whilst Siavash Farahani will write the screenplay.
The move is a little odd considering its been only a little over ten years since a film version involving the character hit the big screen - 1994's "The Shadow".
At the time that film had a lavish $40 million budget, a screenplay by David Koepp, direction by Russell Mulcahy, and a strong cast including Alec Baldwin, Penelope Ann Miller, Tim Curry and Ian McKellen.
Despite its various advantages the film bombed critically and commercially, quashing hopes for a franchise.
