Course Description

The Politics, Passions, and Personnel of Film-Noir (FLM 48)

From its origins in the early 1940s with such films as The Maltese Falcon, Laura, and Double Indemnity, to its decline in the late 1950s, to its resurgence in such "neo-noir" films as Chinatown and Body Heat, the cycle of American cinema known as film noir has become one of the most influential movements in film history. This course traces the social conditions that gave rise to the cycle, examines its literary, artistic, and philosophical underpinnings, and tracks its critical themes, reception, and cultural influence. Well-known and little-known films in the noir canon will be discussed, and film clips will be used to illustrate the individual contributions of studios, directors, writers, cinematographers, and actors.

Eddie Muller

Author; Film Historian

Eddie Muller has written three books on the film noir phenomenon: Dark City: The Lost World of Film Noir; Dark City Dames: The Wicked Women of Film Noir; and The Art of Noir. Founder and president of the non-profit Film Noir Foundation, Muller has hosted film noir retrospectives in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattle, and has contributed audio commentary to several DVD editions of film noir classics. He is also the author of two mystery novels set in 1940s San Francisco: The Distance and Shadow Boxer.

John Billheimer

Author John Billheimer received a PhD from Stanford, and is the author of the "funny, sometimes touching" Owen Allison mystery series set in Appalachia's coalfields. The Drood Review voted his first book, The Contrary Blues, one of the ten best mysteries of 1998. Four subsequent novels, including the most recent, Stonewall Jackson's Elbow, explore various scams in his native West Virginia.

Nog nooit zoveel "Noirs" in korte tijd voor zover ik me herinneren kan...de BBC weet dit geweldige genre nog te waarderen en begint 2008 veelbelovend!

Wat een absurde tijdstippen

Opnemen. Dat doe ik iig.

OUT OF THE PAST staat bij mij op de planning.

DEAD RECKONING en IN A LONELY PLACE nog niet gezien, maar wel reeds in het bezit van een dvd exemplaar (Humphrey Bogart box). TOUCH OF EVIL ook in het bezit (Orson Welles box).

Vergeet vooral Bigger Than Life niet! Prachtige film. Hoewel niet per see vergelijkbaar vond ik 'm veel beter dan Out of the Past.

Overigens heeft de BBC wel vaker veel klassiekers rond december/januari gehad. En ook wel vaker rondom een genre. Verwacht niet meteen grote veranderingen voor heel 2008.

Bigger Than Life ga ik dan ook gewoon kijken, als het even meezit tenminste. Touch of Evil en In a Lonely Place ken ik al. De andere films zal ik gewoon missen helaas, want ik heb geen mogelijkheid tot opnemen op het moment.

Bigger Than Life is een grote aanrader. Ik heb die film niet voor niets in mijn top tien staan natuurlijk . Nicholas Ray's beste film en een fenomenale James Mason in de hoofdrol. Niet te missen (ook al is het geen noir) !

Ik heb de afgelopen tijd 2 film noir sf films gezien. Die 2 gaan heel goed samen. Een van mijn mijn nieuwe lievelings sub-genre's. Die donkere en best rustige sfeer is vaak heerlijk.

Zojuist The Killers (1946) gezien. Alleraardigst, maar daar blijft het ook bij.

Mooie vakantiebestemming (en thuiswedstrijd voor "streeter"):
