Nadat haar man, Donald, bij een vrachtwagenongeval om het leven kwam, verhuizen Alice Hyatt en haar twaalfjarige zoon, Tommy, uit hun huis in New Jersey en vertrekken ze naar Hollywood. Het was altijd al Alice's droom om zangeres te worden, maar voorlopig moet ze het doen met werk als serveerster in een cafetaria: Mel's Diner. Haar baas, Mel, is een norse en veeleisende man die constant de baas speelt over zijn drie serveersters.
