Andy Taylor is weduwe en in het pittoreske Mayberry. Hier moet hij zijn zoon Opie zien op te voeden en is hij tevens de sheriff van het slaperige dorpje in North Carolina. Andy en Opie wonen in huis bij tante Bee, die als surrogaat moeder en vrouw optreedt. Andy's nerveuze neef Barney Fife is de hulpsheriff in het dorpje, maar zijn incompetentie zorgt voor de nodige lastige situaties. Andy doet zijn best om het voor iedereen in Mayberry zo prettig mogelijk te maken.
